YMCA Program provides support, wellness opportunities to Bucks Seniors

senior home exercise RYMCA of Bucks County is proud to introduce Living Active Extended, with a goal to ensure that no senior in Bucks County is left without wellness and social opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is available to residents of Bucks County, age 65 and over.

Living Active Extended provides an adult membership to YMCA of Bucks County with full access to branches in Doylestown, Fairless Hills, Newtown, Quakertown and Warminster. All branches offer state-of-the-art fitness centers with cardio and strength equipment, with most branches offering in-person group exercise classes and pools for lap, recreational and aquatic group exercise and arthritis classes.

In addition to in-person opportunities, the program includes a robust virtual curriculum that divides all participants into small groups with a facilitator who will host virtual gatherings via Zoom. Twice weekly meetings are social and educational in nature with a variety of topics including workshops on nutrition and wellness and an optional book club. YMCA staff will also check-in with participants periodically to discuss short and long term goals and support their participation in the program.

A primary focus of Living Active Extended is free access to the Y’s new, virtual wellness platform which includes online fitness, wellness, nutrition and other activities online. The platform includes live and on-demand classes with YMCA instructors and 1000s of on-demand classes from instructors nationwide including all levels of at-home group exercise. On-demand programs include topics of interest to seniors and include classes for individuals with diabetes, Parkinson's disease and cancer as well as workshops on financial wellbeing, sleep and stress management.

The program runs until December 31, 2020. The cost is $40 per month, but thanks to a grant provided by the County of Bucks using CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) funding, the program will be free to any senior whose income is less than $54,150 per year or $61,850 for a family of two. Seniors earning more may be eligible for a discounted fee. For more information or to register, visit ymcabucks.org/laex or call 215.348.8131.
