ABILITY PROGRAMS FOR ALL AGES

Programs, services and modifications for individuals with special needs

YMCA of Bucks County offers adapted activities for youth, teens, and adults that include swim lessons, land fitness classes, one-on-one fitness instruction, karate, ACHIEVE peer socialization, summer camp, teen nights and afterschool programs.

Ability Membership

An ABILITY membership is available to those who qualify offering membership and programs at a reduced rate. The membership is designed so that members can be safe and successful while using the facility or participating in programs, with the assistance of a caregiver.

ABILITY SUMMER CAMP

Looking for an outstanding camp experience for a child with special needs? Ability Camp is a "camp within a camp" and provides support for campers who require smaller ratios and additional support.

Application Process

Registration for Ability Summer Camp programs is by application only. Parent input and involvement in planning and managing behaviors is also expected. Prior to enrolling in Ability Summer camp at the Y, parents/guardians must complete an intake application packet. Please see below for details regarding the application process.

Application Process - Doylestown
For NEW Campers/LITs *Your child is considered a new camper if they have never attended an Ability Summer Camp program at YMCA of Bucks County.

  1. Contact Daniel Hontz to obtain an application intake packet.
  2. Complete application intake packet and return to Daniel Hontz.
  3. The intake application packet is reviewed by Ability camp leadership staff.
  4. Upon review, a new camper interview will be scheduled with Ability camp leadership staff, at least one parent/guardian, and the camper present. Camp registration approval decision will be made after this meeting and then relayed to parents.
  5. If approved to register, proceed to the Welcome Center to complete the registration packet and camp selection grid. Financial and liability waivers will be signed at this time and camp payments schedule.

For RETURNING Campers/LITs*Your child is considered a returning camper if they have previously attended at least one full week of Ability Summer Camp at YMCA of Bucks County.

  1. Contact Daniel Hontz to obtain a returning camper update form.
  2. Complete update form and return to Daniel Hontz.
  3. Form is reviewed by Ability camp leadership staff. Camp registration approval decision will be made once form is reviewed.
  4. **If approved to register, proceed to the Welcome Center to complete the registration packet and camp selection grid. Financial and liability waivers will be signed at this time and camp payments schedule

*Intake applications must be received 2 weeks prior to the start of camp.
** We reserve the right to request an intake interview for returning campers who have had previous violations of the Behavior Expectations agreement

Age 12-21 | An afterschool program for youth/teens currently enrolled in elementary, middle or high school. Programs held at Doylestown branch clubhouse <MAP TO CLUBHOUSE>

MAINSTREAM & ABILITY SPORTS, FITNESS AND HUMANITIES

The Y offers sports, fitness and humanities activities and programs for all ages.

Ability Day-Off School Camp

Holiday camp is available for children of all abilities on days when schools are closed and families are looking for fun, safe and engaging coverage for their children. Elementary (age 6-12) and teen (age 13-21) groups available.

Ability Teen Night

For ages 13-21 | Typically held the twice a month during the school year, activities include swimming, dancing, sports, games and more!

Adapted Sports/Fitness

For ages 13-21 | A variety of programs are offered providing a small group setting with instructions for teens with special needs and led by Ability personal trainers. Program offered on a seasonal, rotating basis. See below for current offerings.

ADULTS & OLDER TEENS

Seekers

Age 18 + | Sept through June
A recreation program for adults with disABILITIES to enjoy a variety of structured activities, including crafts, pool (optional), gym games and ample social opportunities with peers.

One-on-one Instruction/Private Lessons

Work one–on–one with a trained instructor in fitness and aquatics programming. Workouts individually designed with participants goals in mind.  Flexible options for all levels once or twice a week. Instruction geared toward individuals who may benefit more from a personalized instruction setting.

Ability Holiday Camps
Send your child to the Y for their best day off from school ever! Kids will enjoy fun activities such as art, music, and games in the morning followed by outside sports and games, and swimming in the afternoon.

Fit Me (age 6-17)
FitMe is small-group and individual fitness instruction for children and teens with special needs. Led by a pediatric physical therapist, small groups of individuals will participate in strength, endurance, and flexibility activities incorporating coordination, balance, socialization, and FUN! An open gym space encourages functional strengthening and whole-body movement. Prior to enrollment, participants will receive a one-on-one consultation with the instructor to review medical history, assess current fitness and mobility levels, discuss goals, and determine best class placement. One-on-one instruction is also available.  A written physician clearance to participate in exercise is required.
